Xylazine is a non-narcotic sedative with muscle-relaxing properties, acting as an alpha2-adrenoreceptor agonist. Deep sedation is achieved within 3 to 5 minutes for IV administration and within 10 to 15 minutes for IM administration, making it ideal for quick procedures. Can be used for sedation during diagnostic, orthopedic, and dental procedures, as well as preanesthesia for both local and general anesthesia. Tolerated at 10 times the recommended dosage, though higher doses may produce muscle tremors and prolonged sedation.
